Age calculator by date of birth

Enter a date of birth and an ‘Age on’ date to see a calendar-accurate age in complete years, months, and days. Choose a past, present, or future reference date to reproduce age on an event.

Read the numbers as complete calendar units: years are completed anniversaries, months are complete calendar months after that anniversary, and days are the remainder. A zero is meaningful. For consequential decisions, compare this planning result with the governing rule. Duration is different: it uses browser-local date-times, has no IANA selector, and distinguishes calendar components from total seconds. Timezone conversion rejects a DST gap; a repeated fall-back hour is ambiguous until its offset is confirmed.

How this is calculated

The engine rejects invalid dates and a reference date before birth. It finds the latest completed calendar anniversary, then counts complete calendar months and remaining calendar days. Month lengths and leap years are respected; years and months are normalized so months remain 0–11 and days are the remainder.

Assumptions and limits

Worked examples

Exact birthday

Inputs: Date of birth: 1994-09-04; Age on: 2026-09-04

Result: 32 years, 0 months, 0 days

The reference date is the 32nd calendar anniversary, so no additional months or days remain.

The day before a birthday

Inputs: Date of birth: 1994-09-04; Age on: 2026-09-03

Result: 31 years, 11 months, 30 days

The 2026 anniversary has not arrived, so the completed-year count is 31 and the remaining interval ends on September 3.

February 29 birthday in a common year

Inputs: Date of birth: 2020-02-29; Age on: 2025-02-28

Result: 5 years, 0 months, 0 days

Under this engine’s convention, February 28 is the anniversary when the reference year has no February 29.

Frequently asked questions

How does this calculator determine exact age?

It compares the birth date with the selected reference date, finds completed calendar years, then reports remaining complete months and days. It does not divide days by 365.

Can I calculate age on a past or future date?

Yes. Change ‘Age on’ to reproduce age on an earlier event or project a future calendar age.

How is a February 29 birthday handled?

In a non-leap reference year, this engine clamps the anniversary to February 28. Verify any legal or policy-specific rule separately.

Why is the result not total days divided by 365?

Years can contain 365 or 366 days and months have different lengths, so calendar arithmetic preserves the years, months, and days people use to describe age.

What if birth is after the reference date?

The calculator treats that as invalid and asks for a reference date on or after birth rather than presenting a negative age.
